UK Open Darts: Day 1 Round up

Good morning from Minehead! Day 1 of the UK Open Darts finals is over and what an action packed 24 hours it was.

159 players entered Butlins at 10 am  to play for the title of Ladbrokes UK Open Champion 2019, by 10:30 pm we were down to just 32 players! ITV4 commentator Jacqui Oatley described it as the “busiest day in TV darts history”.

We were joined bright and early by #TeamRileys 2019 crew who had passed their way through over 2500 players to take their place in the draw.

The early favourite for us was Rileys previous darts star, Barry Lynn. Barry starred for #TeamRileys in that now infamous UK Open, where Rob Cross started his journey to becoming a darts World Champion.

It was a tough day for Barry, first up on Stage 2 against Michael Rasztovits, Barry suffered lots of dropped dart, many falling out of the treble 20, eventually losing 6-4. One down 15 to go!

Former pro, Wez Newton who qualified at Rileys Chorlton, also had a tough day at the office. Wez was picked to play second on Main Stage live on ITV 4. Wez had a 86.56 average against Cameron Menzies, but lost 6-4.

Controversy hit Menzies in the next round as Paul Hinks had his eagle eyes on the watch! The 5 minute warning came and went and Paul called Jamie Bain the winner by time out.

Victoria Qualifier Robbie Collins opened up with an emphatic 6-1 victory against Rowby-John Rodriguez. The Robbie train was then stopped abruptly by Andy Boulton, losing 6-3 in the 2nd Round.

Battle of #TeamRileys saw Andy Jenkins, Benfleet Qualifier, take on Shaun Fox our Norwich qualifier. Andy winning 6-1.

Lloyd Browning our Worcester qualifier, was draw against our Wolverhampton qualifier Lee Harris, Browning coming out on top 6-5.

The shining light of the day was a man from Bolton, called Scott Taylor. Scott qualified in Rileys Chester back in early February. Taylor had unfinished business with the darts world, having lost his professional tour card last year. Scott Taylor turned his £8 entry into £2000 with his 4th round KO.

The award of the day had to go to Kirk Shepherd for his best David Brent impression to upstage Dancing Dimitri
