A Preview of the 2019 Royal Rumble

For some, Wrestlemania is the jewel in the WWE’s crown. But for us – and plenty others that dig the sheer insanity and carnage of it all – the Royal Rumble is number one. Anything that features dozens of wrestlers in the ring together all at the same time gets our vote.

The 30 man Royal Rumble match itself, where the winner gets a world championship match at the next WrestleMania, is the highlight of this huge event. But there’s plenty more to enjoy about a Royal Rumble besides that. Including, for only the second ever time, a women’s Royal Rumble dust-up.

Here’s your quick at-a-glance guide to this year’s Royal Rumble…

What time does the Royal Rumble start?

2019 Royal Rumble Preview (1)

This year’s Royal Rumble kicks off around Midnight UK time on the morning of Monday 28th January. There’s due to be a pre-show (featuring a couple of matches) before then. So tune in from 10pm on Sunday night to make sure you miss none of the action.

Where does it take place?

2019 Royal Rumble Preview (1)

This year’s Royal Rumble is happening in Arizona, with downtown Phoenix having the honour of hosting the event. It will all be going down at Chase Field, the home of the Major League Baseball side the Arizona Diamondbacks. Formerly called the Bank One Ballpark, this high-tech and modern sports arena is pretty sizeable, so it’ll have no issue holding all those crazy, amped-up, sign-waving WWE fanatics.

The Rules

2019 Royal Rumble Preview (1)

Of course, there are plenty of ‘regular’ matches at a Royal Rumble. But it’s the big ‘Battle Royal’ that we’re all really interested in.

The premise really is pretty simple… As are the rules. Across roughly an hour, 30 wrestlers are introduced into the squared circle to wrestle each other. One by one and at consistent intervals (usually 60 or 90 seconds).

The winner is the last man (or woman) standing. The way to eliminate a fellow fighter? Throw them over the top rope (both of their feet need to be on the floor for it to count as an elimination).

The rules are exactly the same for both the men’s and women’s event.

Our Picks

2019 Royal Rumble Preview (1)

The odds make it pretty clear, the main favourites here are Seth Rollins and Charlotte Flair. But at Evens and odds against, we don’t really fancy a bet on either of them here. Though, of course, there really is every chance they’ll win. Especially in the case of Ric Flair’s daughter…

Flair is a seven time champion, after all. Becky Lynch could beat off Ms. Flair, but for a value punt we’re going to plum for Shayna Baszler. At 16/1 she’s value. And let’s not forget – the woman is an absolute tank. She may be 38 years old, but the former MMA competitor is wily and rock solid.

As for the men’s Royal Rumble, looking past the obvious pick of Rollins, we’re going to predict that Raw’s Braun Strowman will win. The 6ft 8″ Orlando giant holds the most eliminations ever in a single Royal Rumble match with 13. This could be his year…
